6 Scene-Stealing Beauty Trends to Borrow From Milan Fashion Week

A welcome aura of exuberance hung over the runways of Milan this week, reminding onlookers that, while all-natural beauty has its place, so does strategically striking splendor. After a series of shows that aimed for a come-as-you-are target, Italy eschewed any semblance of pared-down beauty in favor of touches of modern glamour, light-catching embellishments and vivid slashes of color acting as an antidote to aesthetic nonchalance. From backstage mane makeovers designed to subvert—then promptly steal—the scene, to ample touches of sparkle, these beauty lessons are anything but subtle. Rather, look to the runways of Milan Fashion Week for a lesson in reanimated, cool-girl luxury.

There’s a Bob for Everyone
Lengths trimmed to skim the jawline returned with an individualized vengeance in Milan, the transformations pivoting between edgy—in both style and of-the-moment sensibility—and wholly polished. Model Stella Lucia offered up yet another above-neck rebel call at Roberto Cavalli, allowing hairstylist Paul Hanlon to shape her rumpled, medium-length peroxide for a piece-y chop backstage before the show—and bleach her previously dark roots, to boot. Just a few days prior, the runway at Moschino welcomed a parade of Jackie Onassis look-alikes, led by Kaia Gerber and her voluptuous, not-a-hair-astray bouffant bob. The lesson? There is a place for all on the close-crop spectrum.

The New Cat-Eye Is Glittery and Gorgeous
To echo a notion presented at New York Fashion Week, the time has come to exchange onyx-edged eyes for splashes of color. At Prada, Pat McGrath played up the collection’s vibrant color-scape with geometric bolts of eyeshadow, high-impact hues sliced across the lids of seven models—handpicked by Mrs. Prada herself—and bedecked in a sequence of Swarovski crystals for a moment that was one part modern showgirl, and one part constellations personified.

The Rock ’n’ Roll Blowout Is Back
The air-dried waves of seasons past have officially met their stylized match. The center-separated manes at Versace were defined by their blown-out texture, smoothed-down crowns giving way to slightly undone ends, the flyaway wisps throughout tucked neatly behind both ears in a show of rocker-inspired insouciance. Call it the new bedhead, if you must.

A Golden Gleam Is the Fastest Way to Wake Up Your Makeup
If the brightening touches at Fendi are any indication, color-matched concealer isn’t the only way to reinvigorate a sleep-sapped gaze. Makeup artist Peter Philips presented a universal solution to tired eyes, pressing models’ inner corners with a luminous touch of alabaster shadow that popped with a silvery-golden gleam against bare skin. Not today, jet lag!

Fiery Red Is the Hair Color of the Moment
“Set aflame” is the mane mode of the moment. What began as a one-off showstopper at Alexander Wang, where EZ traded her platinum close-crop for a rubicund iteration—“I think red is the color right now; it’s the one everybody wants,” was the model’s verdict—snowballed into a trio of similar metamorphoses; and, after all, three is a trend. At the Ashish show in London, a Kool-Aid-color mane was matched to a set of aviators in a splashy celebration of the shade. And as for Milan? Hanlon sought to transform Lina Hoss into a reincarnation of Ziggy Stardust, her dirty-blonde buzz cut topped in a trompe l’oeil mullet that was dyed a fiery tangerine.
