The 7 Beauty Trends That Ruled 2017

As 2017 comes to a close, take a moment to reminisce on some of the year’s best and most showstopping beauty trends, which collectively were a celebration of individuality and femininity with a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. From jaw-dropping legs that reigned supreme on streets and red carpets alike, to radical platinum dye jobs and transformative haircuts that sent shock waves ’round the world, here are the nine best beauty trends, and their rule breakers, of the year.

Legs for Days
Long limbs were hard to miss this year. Practically everyone from Elsa Hosk and Selena Gomez, the latter of whom found her stride while cycling around with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, to ageless beauty Susan Sarandon, put their best leg forward. Met with a hint of glistening bronze oil, and prepped by side planks, lunges, and suspended poses, the It body part is surely a trend that will stick around next year, especially as awards season approaches.

Statement Hair Accessories
Bare hair? No thank you. The year’s best lengths were aptly decorated and highly embellished, by way of bold headbands, crystal barrettes, dazzling tiaras, and haute rain gear. Even the ubiquitous scrunchie made a comeback. Looking for something even more effortlessly chic? Just put a bow on it.

Sparkling Eyes, Lips, and Nails
Glitter was everywhere, as seen on 3-D dangling nail statements, crystalized face jewelry, and fits of shimmering eyeshadow, the latter of which came courtesy of all the celebrity beauty moguls: Pat McGrath and Rihanna both turned up the shine. As if all their offerings weren’t enough, the 99-cent international sensation that is the Kirakira app bowed to much fanfare, too. Need proof? Look no further than this eye-catching selfie, courtesy of mother-daughter powerhouses Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber.

Ice-Blonde Hair
Platinum had its crowning moment with Selena Gomez and Kim Kardashian West (not to mention her mom, Kris Jenner), who all took the peroxide plunge this year. As Emilia Clarke transformed into her on-screen persona Khaleesi in real life, model Karlie Kloss and Arianna Grande made the icy new hair color their fall signature, too. The takeaway? When temperatures go low, hair color should go high.

Bold Buzz Cuts
Just when we thought air-dried waves were destined to take stronghold, along came a series of game-changing chops that ruled feeds for days. Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, and Katy Perry were among those who got a shave, but it was actress Kate Hudson, known for her bouncy blonde ringlets, who famously traded in her lengths for a career-making buzz cut. Nothing that a touch of black winged liner, and a rocker beau, couldn’t handle.

Millennial Pink Makeup
The fashion shows were peppered with bright punches of pink blush, so it’s only natural the electric hue found a home off the runway and on some of the most in-demand faces of the moment. Gigi Hadid dabbed rose pigment on her lips, cheeks, and eyelids for a monochromatic look, while Rihanna gave fans a sneak peak of her colorful makeup line, Fenty Beauty, by sporting a holographic magenta display at the 2017 Met Gala.

Bobbed Blowouts
Honed by the likes of Kerry Washington, Jourdan Dunn, and Alicia Vikander, the short, cool-girl cut of the year felt radically fresh. Why? Because the shoulder-grazing length, whether worn frizzy, sleek, or choppy, offers an instant injection of je ne sais quoi.
