HOW BEAUTY PRO CLAIRE MARSHALL PERFECTS A SUBTLY SEXY DAY-TO-NIGHT LIP SWITCH
The life of a modern-day, digi-focused content maker is nothing if not peripatetic. Claire Marshall was raised on the East Coast and currently counts downtown Los Angeles as home base, though her work keeps her jetting around. (And the output, seen on Instagram and YouTube by more than 1.6 million, means she’s known globally). And thanks to a life on the go, Marshall has perfected the art of instantly updating up her makeup look by changing her lip.

Marshall found her beauty calling when, with no formal training, she landed a job as a makeup artist at 25. Ballet recitals and acne scarring gave her the real-life experience she needed. Today’s easy access to online tutorials wasn’t a thing then, prompting her to do lots of mirror-facing experimentation to find the best way to highlight her almond-shaped eyes.

After becoming more interested in online tutorial makeup videos, she decided to create her own, shooting and producing them between various jobs. Marshall started her own YouTube channel at a moment when the phenomenon was just taking off. Within a year, she was able to pay her rent with her videos.
On an average, non-YouTube’d day, Marshall keeps her makeup relatively simple with a natural-hued lipstick like Rouge Dior Liquid Lipstick in #614 Jungle Matte. When it comes to lips and eyes, it’s all about balance. “I tend to focus on one or the other, eye or lip, and don’t do both bold.” Whether beige or more pink, it's always a color that enhances her natural look.

Her combined style DNA—part practical East-Coaster, part laid-back Angeleno—means she’s especially happy with the recent beauty trend to favor a more realistic, I-woke-up-like-this vibe. “I like the pivot in the industry where they’re embracing natural beauty," she says. "There are no real rules to makeup.”

When she needs to switch her look throughout the day, whether it’s prepping for on-camera work, a big meeting, or evening plans, Marshall leaves her eyes alone and focuses mostly on upping her lip game. “The only thing I’ll really change is my lip color. I still like to look like myself, but I’ll add a pop of color on my lips.”
The painterly and the practical both play in her approach, too. For the evening-ready look Marshall helped Puck with, and her own, the driving force is that the woman wearing the makeup has to feel good. “You have to feel confident in whatever you’re wearing,” she insists. She also considered their outfits before selecting which hues to use. It was obvious that bold lips would pop as a statement accessory (though a studded Lady Dior doesn’t hurt either). Marshall enhanced her own lips with Rouge Dior Liquid Lipstick in #999 Matte, the perfect shade of red.

Whether vampish for night or natural for day, the common thread is a classic, but undeniably stunning look capped off by the perfect hue of lip color.
