Shocking Pink Lips and “Spa Skin” at the Airport? Maison Margiela Says Yes!

To say that the models at today’s travel-inspired Maison Margiela show—bedecked with white eye masks and inflatable neck pillows, their accessories cheekily stamped with “priority” stickers—were ready for takeoff would be an understatement. Complementing John Galliano’s sumptuous trenchcoat frocks, plume-trimmed gentlemen’s suiting, and calf-high cowboy boots (all hastily thrown together, seemingly) was a radical approach to airplane beauty.

It began with makeup artist Pat McGrath’s shocking fuchsia mouth (a bespoke mix of her line’s LuxeTrance Psycho Candy and MatteTrance Full Panic) painted on in a “flocked” shape that, upon closer examination, revealed two twin hearts that were turned on their sides. Luxurious? Yes—but not totally impractical given its ultra-matte (and in-flight-meal–proof) finish. To combat the pitfalls of a frequent-flier complexion, McGrath created “spa skin” backstage, using her Skin Fetish 003 highlighter all over the face, with an emphasis on the lids, cheekbones, temples, and inner corners of the eyes. And then there was the airplane equivalent of bedhead, courtesy of hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. The collection’s omnipresent feathers, in shades of white, onyx, and cobalt blue, found their way into the glossy wet-looking strands in a variety of methods: trailing behind a slicked-back bun; intertwined with lengths to look like streaky ’90s highlights; amassed on the crown of a head like a fascinator. From the vivid pout to the manes artfully getting the better of a travel-size pillow, consider Margiela’s Spring 2018 season a lesson in unabashed jet-set beauty.
