This Romantic Makeup Statement Is About to Sweep New York Fashion Week

If pressed to pick a favorite frock designer of the moment, chances are any downtown romantic would answer Brock Collection, whose candy-color puff-shoulder gowns and floral corsets have proven well worth the splurge. And now, #brockbabes will be clamoring after something other than just the cherry-dotted ruffled dresses sent down the house’s gardenia-strewn runway for Spring 2018: the burnished bubblegum eye that accompanied them.

“I immediately knew I wanted to do pink,” said makeup artist Gucci Westman backstage early this afternoon as she masterfully mixed pigmented powders—chocolate, burgundy, and red-tinged bronze—over models’ lids before tapping on a bold fuchsia eyeshadow. “Then I asked [myself], ‘How can we make it interesting? How can we give it an edge?’ ” Westman found her answer in a “lived-in” approach that centered around a fine-tipped kohl crayon and Maybelline’s Color Sensational Matte Metallics Lipstick in Molten Bronze, which were dragged across water lines and blended across lash lines respectively. “I want to avoid it looking too pretty,” she explained while using her finger to smudge the results. “I don’t mind if it’s a little messy. It shouldn’t be perfect.” A beauty mantra well worth holding on to during Fashion Week’s crack-of-dawn call times and late-night after-parties.
